- Will the Manchester United defense cope with City’s attack?
The defense was ripped apart once Johnny Evans was sent off in that 6-1 defeat and your facing one of best attacking team in the world with 10 men so you shouldn’t be surprised that City scored 5 goals. The real key for United, is who will partner Rio at the back? I read earlier that Chris Smalling will be fit for the match but in the last match Phil Jones proved to me his best position is CDM/CM, if he has to play in defense have him play at RB where he can venture forward and have the ability to attack and influence the game.
- Will the real Wayne Rooney please stand up!
Wayne Rooney hasn’t played well in the big games this season, when you need your best player to have a good game and Wayne hasn’t done it since Barca in the Champions League final when he scored. He might have scored against Chelsea but he was poor, against City he was quiet and frustrated, he didn’t step up away to Basel, at Liverpool he wasn’t in the “right mind” to start, and away to Newcastle. Our last game was a big match coming off a loss at home and having City at the weekend we needed to play well, get the confidence up and what happened was Wayne didn’t play as he was in La-La land.
- The Midfield
I think this will decide the game more than anything. Manchester United last played City with the Flecther- Anderson combo. Well it didn’t work as now both players haven’t started since that game with Fletcher taking leave of absence because of illness and Anderson having a “knee injury”. I emphasize this because if he really had a knee injury, he wouldn’t have been back this quickly. I think Sir Alex told Anderson to get in shape and play better, knowing Anderson has a new hair cut and he looked more fitter, and the belly area isn’t looking so big either. Anderson was chasing Yaya and David Silva shadows all game as City ripped apart my beloved team, in the process embarrassing us. Now a new midfield combo has emerged with the Phil Jones-Michael Carrick partnership.
Why does this partnership work? Well simply because Phil Jones is always running around chasing, hassling, and disrupting the opposing midfielder’s best player. In the process, he is going up the pitch and getting in attack positions scoring goals. Carrick has always been like a security blanket for the defense, he sits behind Phil and allows him to spread the ball around and also stops Wayne from dropping back into midfield.
This game will be the redemption game for Manchester United coming off the back two consecutive losses and facing the team that bent the team over, and spanked them in front of the Old Trafford faithful.
Now the real thing is how will City come out and play with possibly no Yaya or Kolo Toure, Mario Balotelli, and the suspended Gareth Barry, coming off that huge win against United? How will it play out?
